Parkerizing

Sorry for the lack of posts, but I have been busy wrenching on stuff...

I fabricated an upper horn bracket and a bunch of other horn mounting parts. The guy who designed the late thirties HD horn mounts must have had a lot of friends who needed manufacturing jobs. There are 15 individual brackets required to mount a horn in stock fashion, not counting the nuts, bolts, and washers!

The good news is I am close to achieving a Zenlike oneness with my hacksaw and bench grinder...

I also wanted to post some pictures of the parkerizing process, a process HD borrowed from gunsmiths. Here, to compare with the "before" pic above, is an "after" picture of the upper horn bracket, along with an "in process" picture:

Here's another batch of parkerized parts, fresh out of the parkerizing bath with a coating of motor oil on them to soak in.

For you Harley purists, one of these things does not belong. It's a rear headlight bracket of my own design until I get the right triple clamp put back on. See if you can find it, while you hum the "One of these things is not like the other" theme from Sesame Street...

Finally, here is the horn and stock headlight, installed.

Just need to find the correct 12v headlight bulb for the old springer headlight. I think HarleyWidow thinks I have gone off my rocker posting so many pictures of obscure parts.

Sorry, I know that song is still in your head. It's in my head too...

  1. Nice work. I was just inspecting all that hardware on Knucklehead Steve's Knuck last Sunday. I was shocked how many shims etc. there are.

  2. Hey - was that my good pan????

Just kidding. I do think Flathead45... hmmmm, just noticed how much Flathead45 reminds me of the affectionate pet name of Butthead I use on occasion....but only in the nicest way....

Anyway, I do think Flathead45 has gone off his rocker, but I thought that well before he bought this bike sooooo...not much has really changed!

Just kidding, but if we have to go to McLendon's one more time with week, our youngest child may demonstrate a two-year-old's temper tantrum...
