Pioneer Square

This photo shows up pretty often in Seattle. It was taken in a location now known as called Pioneer Square. I don't know the date, but from the bikes I speculate it is around WWI (1914?).

The three leading the pack are all riding Excelsior V-Twins. When Bitmonkey and I saw the Motorcycle Cannonball, it was easy to identify the Excelsior riders. They were in the bar instead of pulling jugs and splitting cases in the parking lot.

Curiously, the Merchant's Cafe, which you can see in the background on the left, is still in business, and claims to be the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Seattle. It opened in 1890, immediately after the Seattle Fire of 1889 which pretty much flattened this part of town.

Lots of action on the '38U, but not too much picture-worthy:

- tanks and fenders are at Ed's for paint
- Toolbox bracket (from Raceframe Engineering in Australia) is welded to the frame, thanks to weldor extraordinaraire Mike E (and "Kirby" for the hauling). We need to convince Mike to be a Cossack... Toolbox fits nice.
- Cut off the last vestiges of Jeff's bobber seat mounts the old fashioned way, with a hacksaw. My shoulder is sore, and I know what it would be like to break out of jail now. Ground them down, and you can't ever tell they were there.
- Wheels are pulled off, and go to Classic Thunder tomorrow to get tires dismounted and trueness checked. Then off to be powdercoated white.
- Got a repro cloth-covered wiring harness from Ziggy today in Port Orchard, after a beautiful but blustery ferry ride. Added bonus: watched my son play goalkeeper in a really nasty soccer game. Just for the record, slide-tackling keepers is just "not cricket", even if the hometown referee looks the other way.

Next area of focus is to touch up the frame paint, and then start wiring. Uncomfortable feeling to have pieces of Hollister scattered all over town... Stay tuned for more to come.

I'll leave you with another pic from Iron Wigwam:

  1. Any idea when your paint might be finished? Can't wait to see it.

I spent lots of this weekend with a hacksaw as well.

That last picture is just the coolest.
